Top 5 Signs Your Plumbing System Needs Maintenance

Most plumbing emergencies we attend did not start as emergencies. They started as a slow drain, a faint damp patch, or a tap that needed a slightly harder twist to close. Catch these warnings early and a KSh 2,000 repair stays a KSh 2,000 repair.

1. Slow drainage across more than one fixture

A single slow sink is usually a local blockage. When the shower, basin and kitchen sink all drain slowly, the problem is further down the line — often in the main waste pipe. That is a job for professional unclogging equipment, not another bottle of drain cleaner.

2. Damp patches, stains or a musty smell

Water staining on a ceiling or a persistent musty smell in a bathroom almost always means a hidden leak. Left alone, it rots timber, lifts tiles and feeds mould — and mould is far more expensive to remediate than a leaking joint is to fix.

3. Water pressure that has dropped over time

Gradual pressure loss points to sediment build-up, partially closed valves or a developing leak. A sudden pressure drop is more urgent — it can indicate a burst pipe somewhere in the system.

4. Gurgling sounds in pipes or drains

Gurgling is trapped air — and air gets trapped when water cannot flow freely. It is one of the earliest signs of a forming blockage and the cheapest moment to deal with it.

5. Rising water bills with no change in usage

If your bill climbs but your habits have not changed, water is escaping somewhere. A silent leak in a toilet cistern alone can waste thousands of litres a month.
